The Roof Framers Field Manual

Learn the science and math of roof framing! All your difficult to solve roof framing problems are contained in this one concise book. Don’t waste your time searching the internet for half answers written by bloggers who have never driven a nail. Save yourself frustration and time.  If you frame houses for a living you’re going to wish you had this book.  In this book I’ve tried to include a different framing scenario on each page so the answer can be found quickly on the job. The large clear drawings make each concept easier to understand. This book explains exactly how to program a hand held calculator (like the casio fx 9860G) or phone app to solve difficult framing issues like a dual pitch roof for instance. Be more productive. Your co-workers will be amazed.  There is no other book like it out there. I’ve updated this book in 2018!  Though the math behind the framing never really changes;  using a modern computing device will help you with the heaving lifting on complex framing projects.

This book is written by a roof framer for roof framers. It is intended to be instructional but it assumes you have some framing experience and knowledge of basic geometry. However the book reviews what you need to know. So it won’t waste your time telling you how to nail boards together.  Instead it tells you how to lay out, measure and cut the angles for almost any type of roof.  The answers you’ve been looking for is right here in this book. On this website it is offered as a PDF book. So you can download it on your smartphone,  and have it handy on the job.

The picture above is the calculator I used in the book as an example. With only minor difference the formulas really have not changed in the last 35 years.  Years ago I started with a radio shack model that only allowed 550 steps of programming data. We’ve come a long way since then and a lot more programs can be put in it. This model has improved option (yellow arrow) and function (red arrow) keys to make it easier to enter your formula. If you look at the screen you’ll see some of the programs in this calculator.  Just scroll down to the one you want and hit EXE to run the script. I give you the exact script for these programs in the book for this calculator. I believe you learn more by working through the formulas yourself.

I prefer the calculator over a calculator phone app for several reasons. The calculator has been around for a long time unchanged. Also the calculator can be very quick to switch back and forth from one mode to another. Phone apps can become legacy in just a few years, be riddled with advertising or charge a subscription.  On the other hand phones are very handy and my PDF book can be put on the phone to scroll through if you forget how to make a cut for instance. At any rate we suggest you start with a programmable calculator like the one pictured and then if you feel spunky you can branch out to phone apps. The one I use on my phone is Power One which had it’s own programming language. It still works.  However the software is either legacy now or only available by subscription.
